The Monsoon Wanderlist

August 3, 2016 | Navkiran Brar

There is something so magical about monsoons in India. The sound of thunder, the refreshing breeze on our faces, and the rhythm of falling rain – all make us want to stop everything and just revel in the moment.

Maybe it’s the sweltering heat preceding the monsoon season that makes us welcome it with such open arms. But it brings about a certain joy and happiness that I haven’t experienced anywhere else in the world. Poets have written about it for centuries and Bollywood’s constant ode to it is a testament of India’s love affair with the rain.

However, thanks to the ‘drainless’ metropolitans we live in, the joy of dancing in the rain and jumping in puddles that we so fondly reminisce about from our childhood is overshadowed by the fear of traffic jams, clogged streets, and sewage stench.

But don’t worry. Here is a list of places you can head to, to escape reality and enjoy the monsoon in all its glory. Because no one should be robbed of that glorious smell of mud!

Cherrapunji

The wettest place on earth must be experienced during the wettest time of the year. Fly into Shillong and head to this beautiful town where you can trek through tangled root bridges made from living trees. It’s a crazy experience!

Goa

Our favorite beach spot has a whole new charm to it during the monsoons. Grab an ATV and go quad biking through the forest in the rain. Or just grab a book and watch the rain droplets fall on the beach while sipping on hot tea.

This beautiful hill station in Kerala is at its greenest best during the monsoons. The tea and coffee plantations create a lush green blanket over the hills, making the entire landscape seem like a painting. You have to see it to believe it!

Ladakh

If you haven’t been to Ladakh yet, you are missing out on one of the most beautiful places on earth. The monsoon rains lead to a rise in water levels, meaning you can go white water rafting on the Indus and Zanskar rivers during this time of the year. Don’t miss out!

Udaipur

Monsoon season is one of the most beautiful times to be in Udaipur as the lakes fill up with fresh water and the trees and mountains come alive with greenery. It’s nicknamed “Venice of the East” and you have to check out for yourself why.
